Ben Roethlisberger Investigated for Sexual Assault
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (aka Big Ben) has been accused of sexual assault by a woman at a Georgia nightclub. There was also a seperate civil suit filed against Roethlisberger last year by a Reno woman accusing the Pittsburgh quarterback of rape. Roethlisberger has denied the rape allegations by the Reno woman. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has more on the story here.
Florida State is vacating 12 football victories from the 2007 season. The school is vacating the victories because of an academic cheating scandal. This could explain why Bobby Bowden retired. Take a look:
Drew Brees and New Orleans Saints were impressive in their 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts took a quick 10-0 lead but it was almost all Saints after that. Drew Brees was the MVP and he threw for 32 of 39 and 288 yards. The 32 completions tied the Super Bowl record set by Tom Brady in 2004. Take a look:
Alabama's star running Mark Ingram has won the coveted Heisman Trophy. He is the son of former NFL wide receiver Mark Ingram, Sr. You can see Ingram's career stats here. Mark Ingram averaged over 100 yards per game in 2009. Ingram is the first Crimson Tide player to wind the Heisman.
80-year-old Florida State coach Bobby Bowden is retiring. He spent 34 years as the coach of the Seminoles. Bobby Bowden says, "Nothing lasts for ever, does it. But I've had some wonderful years here at Florida State." The Seminoles were only 6-6 this year, which is not a good season for the school that is used to winning.
Rush Limbaugh Dropped by Group Seeking Rams Purchase
There will be no NFL team for Rush Limbaugh. The AP says the conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been dumped by a group that was seeking to buy the St. Louis Rams. St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts says Limbaugh was dropped from the group he heads because he had become a complication. Rush Limbaugh was once briefly a sports ommentator but quit following controversial racial remarks.
Everyone thought it was not going to happen but ESPN reports that Brett Favre has agreed to play a season with the Minnesota Vikings.
"I felt I did everything I possibly could do to get where I need to be," Favre said at his introductory news conference Tuesday. "You're 39, your arm may not feel like it did at 21. But the pieces are in place that you don't have to do that much and I agree with that.
"If they were willing to take that chance, I was, too."
Favre says he doesn't want to look back and say "what if" years from now Favre said, ""I don't know how I'll feel a year from now, five years from now, but I didn't want to say what if."
The Vikings wanted Brett Farve but they won't get him. He won't be playing this eyar. Farve came out of retirement and played for the New York Jets last year and started 8 in 3 but then the Jets lost the last four of five. Perhaps his retirement is permanent this time.
The Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans in 2013. The League blog reports that Superdome has been repaired. They are ready for another Super Bowl game.
The storm damaged the Superdome and left the future of the New Orleans Saints in doubt. But the Superdome has been repaired, the Saints have stayed and now the city is getting back football's biggest game.
"It's a great day for our community," Saints owner Tom Benson said.
The team recently agreed with the state on a lease to keep the Saints playing at the Superdome through the 2025 season.
New Orleans beat out Miami and Glendale, Arizona for Super Bowl host.
AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner discusses the keys to the Cardinals' victory Philadelphia Eagles. Wilner says no one could cover Larry Fitzgerald.
Arizona will take a weak 9-7 record into Super Bowl XLIII to face Pittsburgh, which is 12-4. There's a comparison of the teams here on Yahoo.
The Detroit Lions are the worst NFL team ever. They finished the season 0-16 with a loss on Sunday to the Green Bay Sunday, 31-21. This was an incredibly awful season for the Lions to say the very least.
6'4", 218-pound Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has become the second sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy and the fifth player from Oklahoma. Bradford's stats can be found here on ESPN. See Heisman.com for Heisman Tropy history.
Yes, there really is a LFL or Lingerie Football League. What started out as a Super Bowl halftime gimmick is expanding into 10 teams. The CNN clip below shows try-outs for the Lingerie Football League begin in Seattle. Seattle's team will be called "The Mist."

Tom Brady is Out and Matt Cassel is In For the Patriots
New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady is out for the season with a left knee injury. He will be needing surgery to repair his knee injury. The Patriots said Monday that Brady is being placed on injured reserve. Below is a video of the Patriots press conference from the Associated Press.
Donruss Quick to Add Brett Favre Jets Trading Card
It took the Packers over 30-days to resolve the Brett Favre situation but it has only taking Donruss a few days to get him on an NFL player trading card with his new team. Donruss announced that a Brett Favre New York Jets trading card will appear in the company's Playoff Absolute Memorabilia product, scheduled to reach retail stores the first week of September. They are wise to move quickly as the new Brett Favre New York Jets jersey has been flying off shelves.
The Favre card features a photo of the Brett Favre holding up his #4 NY Jets jersey at Thursday's press conference. Donruss dispatched a photographer to the event with the express purpose of creating this special card.
"Trading cards have always helped bring fans closer to the players and commemorate historic moments in sports," said Donruss Marketing /PR Director Scott Prusha. "This is one of the biggest football stories in the past decade and we are honored to bring this historic moment to collectors."
Green Bay has traded superstar quaterback Brett Favre to the New York Jets. This is a move that is undoubtedly going to enrage a lot of Packers fans. Aaron Rodgers will now be the starting QB for the Packers as originally planned before Favre changed his mind about retiring.
The move ends a remarkably ugly split between Green Bay and one of its most beloved players, allows the Packers to move forward with new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers and gives Favre a fresh start - although not exactly the one he wanted, as Favre's first choice was widely believed to be the Minnesota Vikings.
Favre was scheduled to leave Hattiesburg, Miss., Thursday morning and the Jets said he would be at a 6 p.m. EDT news conference in Cleveland, where New York plays the Browns in a preseason game later Thursday.
According to NFL.com, the Packers will receive a fourth-round draft pick in 2009. The selection would turn into a third-rounder if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs, or a first-round pick if he plays in 80 percent and the Jets make it to the Super Bowl.
"I am looking forward to seeing Brett Favre in a New York Jets uniform," said Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson in a statement issued early Thursday. "He represents a significant addition to this franchise, and reflects our commitment to putting the best possible team on the field."
Brett Favre's destination of choice was apparently Minnesota so even he didn't get exactly what he wanted. The people happiest with this decision are likely New York Jets fans which is good for them since they usually don't have much to be happy about. The people at Snapper mowers are probably very happy as well since Snapper is a product that Favre is a spokesperson for as you can see by the photograph in this post.
The Associated Press Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner explains the dispute between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. Wilner thinks the standoff won't have a pleasant ending unless one side backs down. Unfortunately, it isn't clear that either side is going to backs down.
38-year-old Brett Favre retired from the Green Bay Packers earlier this year but it seems Favre is having second thoughts. Unfortunately for Packer fans those thoughts appear to have him possibly returning for a didfferent team. The Huffington Postreports that Favre has asked the Packers to release him so he can return to playing football for a different NFL team.
Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told his latest retirement reversal wasn't welcome news in Green Bay. The team said it would do "what's right" in response to Favre's request, which was first reported by ESPN on Friday.
"Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms," the team's statement said.
"We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett's press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team."
This is likely to disappoint many Green Bay Packer fans who see Favre as their quarterback. The latest news is that the Packers won't agree to release Favre.
The 2007-2008 New England Patriots will not be remembed as the greatest team in history. They will not even be the team who won there Super Bowl in 2008. The New York Giants won an exciting Super Bowl game in the final minute with a pass from Eli Manning to Plaxico Burress for 13 yard touchdown. This wouldn't have been possible without a great catch by David Tyree. This was an 83 yard drive by the Giants in the final minutes to snatch the Super Bowl victory away from the Patriots. The will defintely be remembered as one of the greatest Super Bowl games ever. You can see a box score of the game here.
Three third-down passes from Eli Manning helped get the Giants in field goal range. Lawrence Tynes made a 32-yard field goal for the first points of the game.
The New York Giants took the opening kickoff and held the ball for just under 10 minutes before Lawrence Tynes kicked a 32-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead over the unbeaten New England Patriots in the second quarter of the Super Bowl XLII on Sunday.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning converted three third-down passes during the time-consuming drive.
New England cornerback Randall Gay's return was questionable after injuring his left arm early in the first quarter.
Laurence Maroney has just scored a touchdown for New England to make it 7-3. Not quite as high scoring of a game as you might have expected for these two teams.
It was probably just out of mere curiousity that ABC News/Washington Post ran this poll asking whether people were more excited about the Super Bowl or Super Tuesday. In the football vs. politics it was football by a field goal 40% to 37%.
Asked which they're more excited about, 40 percent in this ABC News/Washington Post poll cite the Super Bowl, which kicks off this Sunday at 6:17 p.m. But in a near-upset, very nearly as many, 37 percent, say they're more keyed up about Super Tuesday.
Each is unique this year: A New England Patriots victory over the New York Giants would produce the first undefeated record for an NFL team in 36 years. On Super Tuesday, an unprecedented 24 states are holding presidential nominating contests. Both events promise chills, thrills and smackdowns; the presidential candidates may not have the crowd-pleasing benefit of cheerleaders, but their contact sport is played without pads.
Fandom has a lot to do with it: Half of Americans describe themselves as football fans, and 63 percent of fans are more excited about the championship game than about the upcoming primaries. But among the half of Americans who aren't fans, Super Tuesday holds greater interest by more than a 30-point margin, 48-17 percent.
Men (who are likelier to be fans) are more interested in Sunday's game, but by a smaller gap than you might expect, 48 percent to 34 percent. And women are more apt to be excited by Super Tuesday than by the Super Bowl, 40 to 32 percent.
The good news is you can watch both. The Super Bowl is this Sunday and Super Tuesday is next Tuesday on February 5th. They are both super events but they don't really compete with each other.
This shouldn't have been any doubts about this at all but there were some concerns. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has confirmed that he will be playing in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. It would have been an absolute shocker if he were to sit out. The cast - whatever that was about - isn't something that was going to prevent him from playing. His ankle is feeling fine. Now that we now he is playing it is time to return to the hype.
The Super Bowl is February 3rd so where's Tom Brady? The AP reports that Tom Brady hasn't been at practice lately. This follows a recent photograph of Tom Brady wearing a foot cast or protective foot boot.
For the second consecutive day, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wasn't in the locker room or at practice when reporters and cameramen were allowed inside Friday.
During the 45-minute period in the locker room, several cameramen lingered near his locker, but he didn't show up. Nor was he there for the first 12 minutes of practice that the media were allowed to watch.
Asked if he could say whether Brady would practice Friday, New England coach Bill Belichick said, "Not now. We'll see."
Brady was photographed in New York on Monday wearing a protective boot on his right foot. He took it off later in the day and hasn't been photographed wearing it since. He reportedly has a minor high ankle sprain that isn't expected to keep him out of the Super Bowl against the New York Giants on Feb. 3.
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has refused to talk about Brady's mysterious cast. An ESPN story calls it "perhaps the most famous walking cast in sports history."
MSNBC reports on footballs being made for the upcoming Super Bowl game. Dozens of the footballs will be made for the game. There are also 100 commemorative footballs.
The Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-17. They will be advancing towards the Super Bowl and not the Cowboys. There is one person that is definitely not to blame and that is actress/singer Jessica Simpson. She wore a pink version of quarterback Tony Romo's jersey (shown on right) to a game that the cowboys lost and a lot of people oddly blamed the loss on her. She wasn't in attendance (as far as we know) at the Cowboys-Giants game which means the Jessica Jinx is over. However, there were lots of blonde women in the stands wearing pink Romo jerseys reports MSNBC.
"I'll take the blame and I'll take the criticism here," Romo said. "That's why we're put in these positions."
There were plenty of blonde women in the stands wearing pink Romo jerseys Sunday, but the woman who made them famous wasn't believed to be among them. Her publicist said earlier in the week she was working on a new album and would not be at the game.
On Dec. 16, Simpson proudly displayed her shirt to television cameras during the Cowboys' game against Philadelphia. Romo injured his throwing thumb and had one of his worst games of the season that day. What they didn't know - or didn't care about - was that she'd attended other Cowboys games and he played just fine.
Then came the fuss about Romo's trip to Mexico leading up to the Giants game.
Dallas had 13 wins in the regular season so they were the favorite going into the game but they couldn't find a way to win it despite a good opportunity near the end of the game.
It finally came down to this: the Cowboys had 1:50 left to go 48 yards.
A Brett Favre-esque scrambling shovel pass to Jason Witten got the Cowboys to the 22 with 31 seconds left, then came more mistakes - another false start, a short pass that forced Dallas to use its final timeout and a pair of poor throws, a ball in the end zone that Patrick Crayton seemed to give up on before futilely speeding up and the final play, caught by McQuarters.
The Giants will face Green Bay in the conference finals.
As you well know the New England Patriots are 15-0 and they are looking to complete a perfect season by defeating the New York Giants at Giants stadium on Saturday. You might expect tickets for this game to be expensive but would you believe $2000 or $2,500 for a single ticket? WCBStv reports tickets are selling for tha tmuch on StubHub and eBay.
Tickets to see the potential milestone are selling for as much as $1,600 a piece on StubHub, and up to $2,500 on eBay.
Yes, $2,500 for a non-playoff game that will be aired on three different networks, a new NFL milestone in and of itself. You could sit home and switch between CBS, NBC, and the NFL network and make your own history -- it's the first three-network simulcast of an NFL game ever -- for free.
The ridiculous asking prices had some Giants players scratching their helmets.
"We don't need fans like that. And that's okay. It's their money. Like [Jeremy] Shockey always said, if they pay their taxes, they can do what they want with their stuff," linebacker Antonio Pierce said.
A 20-person luxury suite is even up for grabs on StubHub. Got $26,114 sitting around? (That's $1,305.70 per person).
You can look here at the eBay prices yourself and see multiple listings for tickets that cross the $1,000 mark. That's a lot of money to see whether or not the undeafted Patriots will stretch their amazing season to 16 wins. The rest of us will be watching comfortably from home for free.
This is one amazing play involving a total of fifteen laterals. The play involving seven Trinity players helped Trinity come back to defeat Millsaps. A chart showing all the laterals used can be found here.
Down 24-16 with just over two minutes to go, Trinity's Riley Curry scored to cut the lead to 24-22. After a missed two point conversion attempt, Trinity's defense held Millsaps to a three-and-out without using any timeouts. The Tigers were left with two seconds and 60 yards to go for a score. 15 laterals and 62 seconds later, Trinity crossed the goal line to win the game and take the upper hand in the conference standings. Seven of the 11 players for Trinity touched the ball including, Blake Barmore, Shawn Thompson, Riley Curry, Josh Hooten, Michael Tomlin, Stephen Arnold, and Brandon Maddux.
Brett Favre: Sports Illustrated's Sportsman Of The Year
Green Bay Packers Brett Favre is the Sports Illustrated Sportsman Of The Year. SI Group Editor Terry McDonell made the announcement.
"Brett is a great winner, but this award recognizes much more than winning," said McDonell. "It recognizes performance off the field equally and celebrates the love of the game. Brett is having an astounding year on every level."
In this week's cover story, SI senior writer Alan Shipnuck talks with Favre about leadership and Favre states, "It's somehow getting 52 other guys to raise their level of play. To get them to believe in what we're trying to do. You do that by setting an example, by doing things the right way. I've always shown up, I've always been prepared, I practice every day. I practice hard. I study. No matter what happens on the field, I never point blame at anybody else. Everything I do comes back to leadership, the example I want to set."
Favre has started 249 consecutive games, the longest streak ever by an NFL quarterback. This season, his 16th in Green Bay, he tied Bart Starr for most seasons in a Packers uniform. He also broke Dan Marino's career records for touchdown passes and pass attempts. With 60,912 passing yards, Farve should soon surpass Marino's career record of 61,361.
Wyoming's Devin Moore runs a kickoff off back 98 yards for a touchdown against Colorado State. Moore faked a reversal to another teammate which helped open holes in the defense.
CSTV's Going West road crew stopped by Arizona State in September and checked out the Tillman Tunnel, which was named for ASU alum and hero Pat Tillman. You can find a stats page for Pat Tillman here.
The Bluegrass Miracle was a game between Kentucky and LUS. LSU won the game on a 74-yard hail mary pass even after the Kentucky coach had been doused with gatorade. Here's a video from CBS. The Bluegrass Miracle is one of the hail mary's listed on Wikipedia's haily mary page.
Air Force quarterback Shaun Carney had this 71-yard touchdown run that put Air Force up 21-7 late in the third quarter. Carney also threw for 123 yards in game.
Can Michigan Ever Recover From Embarrassing Defeat?
CBS reports that University of Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr may never live down last week's huge upset when Michigan was defeated by the Mountaineers from Appalachian State. We constructed the graph on the right to illustrate the point made in the CBS article. It shows how the embarrassment factor just keeps on rising for Lloyd Carr and the University of Michigan fans and team.
Now, think about the most embarrassing moment of your life, then multiply it by a factor of Carr. Lloyd Carr. The Michigan coach is the other side of Appalachian Fever that has struck the country this week.
See the drunk students in Boone. See the goalpost torn down by students and deposited in the driveway of App State chancellor Kenneth Peacock. Salute the aw-shucks Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore. Compare the schools' spending power. App State's football budget is $1.5 million. Michigan is in the middle of a $226 million renovation of its stadium.
We said it was embarrassing. Now see the 62-year-old Michigan coach who has delivered both a national championship and, on Saturday, the competition for arguably the biggest upset in the sport's history.
"I wouldn't want to be on their practice field Tuesday," Moore said.
The aftermath isn't about retribution at Michigan; hopefully it's about sympathy. It's not clear if even a victory over Ohio State this year can save Michigan's season. But one thing is sure 48 hours later: Lloyd Carr will never live this down.
Coach Carr will need a win in next week game to redeem himself and his team from last weekend's tremendous embarrassment. Turn in a solid season or even win the Big Ten and some of the pain caused by last week's defeat may subside. However, the pain of the incident may apparently never completely go away for Carr and the University of Michigan. Carr may even feel like he is "running down the street naked for the rest of his life" according to the CBS story.
It goes a little too far to call the Michigan team an embarrassment, a joke and a team of losers for eternity. Yes, this game will be pointed to for years to come as one of sport's greatest upsets ever. Yes, even decades from now when Michigan is doing better people will still point and laugh at University of Michigan fans and talk about that game years ago when Michigan lost to a Division I-AA team. Yes, the jokes will continue indefinitely. Years from now a Michigan fan may say "I'm a Michigan fan" only to hear someone start chanting, "high on the mountains above the rest there's a university that's going places... Hot hot hot...Appalachian is hot hot hot." It is true that Michigan will never ever be able to forget this defeat and fans of other college teams are sure to help them never forget it.
As huge as Michigan's loss was Appalachian State earned a win here.
It was almost as if Appalachian State was a menacing balrog and Michigan had brought the baby wolverines out to play. Appalachian State proved they were the better team. They worked hard on finding holes in Michigan's defense and excelled on special teams -- especially by blocking Michigan's field goal attempt at the end of the game. The score was close but during the game it felt like ASU was in control. Appalachian State deserves to bask in the glow of this marvelous victory.
As much as Michigan fans would like to forget this game it will be discussed for decades to come and it will be written about over and over again in historical books and sports columns. Disney is probably working on the movie right now. Find more bloggers discussing the historical upset here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here.

Appalachian State (ASU), a Division I-AA team, has defeated the fifth ranked college team in the nation - the University of Michigan Wolverines. The final score was Mountaineers 34 Wolverines 32. The Detroit Free Presscalls it the upset of the century and that's no understatement.
Appalachian State had a 28-17 lead at halftime and almost lost it as Michigan tried to fight back. You can see the box score here on Yahoo Sports. Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns to lead the ASU offense.
A Fox News article calls UofM unfocused. A Sporting Newsarticle calls the big University of Michigan loss a "not so upsetting upset." There's another article on the GoASU.com website.
